We at the Surgical Group of Miami, as vascular
surgeons, feel uniquely qualified to offer patients a full assessment of their needs
and desires as regards to their problems with veins of their upper and lower extremities.
Only a vascular surgeon fully understands and deals with all vein problems,
from massive blood clots to the cosmetic problems of spider veins.
In an effort , therefore, to provide care for the above, the Surgical
Group of Miami offers a full venous evaluation and solutions that run the full gamut of surgical
removal, injection sclerotherapy ,compression therapy and, laser removal. All
procedures have their own indications, risks, and complications .
We at the Surgical Group of Miami will enter into a PARTNERSHIP
with you the patient, to achieve your most maximum desired results. This however, means
that YOU the patient must take responsibility to assure the best of results.
The good news is that the things that you must do are common sense and extremely easy!
Following, you will find in-depth information about the different
modalities that we offer. Most people will need a combination of the above treatments to
achieve the best results.
Please note that we are experts at knowing when insurance might cover
or might reject coverage for a modality offered. For the great majority of you, insurance
will not cover. While we can help you with your claim filing when we feel it is worth your
effort to do so, we expect payment at the time of treatment --EACH TIME!
LASER
Our laser is a KTP (green light) laser known as the
AURA laser with STAR PULSE technology. This is made by the LASERSCOPE company, a pioneer
and leader in the field. It is safe, painless and very accurate.The laser will
deliver a surgically accurate beam of light energy picked up exclusively by the red
pigment of the blood in the spider vessel. The result is destruction of the tiny spider
vein without damage to the surrounding tissues. The treatment is virtually painless and
most patients report a pin-prick sensation which is very tolerable. Anesthesia is provided
by the effects of cold temperature icing to the area just prior to lasing.
Not all veins are treatable by the laser. Usually those fine pink to
red spiders that measure one to two millimeters in width are the ones that respond best.
Normally a brown coloration will form on the skin which falls off in two or three weeks.
Too many people with inappropriate knowledge of your vein problems have become
"experts" at their treatment with expected poor results. This is why skilled
people, accurate instrumentation and good medical judgement is a must in order to obtain
good results.
Treatments are in sessions of approximate ten minute intervals and no
more. Treatment planning will include the extremity by areas and, second treatments to
areas already treated will not be performed for at least two weeks. Do not shave or
depilate the day of treatment .
You must wear appropriately loose clothing and have applied no lotions
or cosmetics to the extremitiy to be treated. You must avoid things that increase
circulation to the skin area such as :
sun
bathing
hot baths or showers
jacuzzis
aerobic exercise
SCLEROTHERAPY
Removal of spider veins by injection of an irritant
is a very old way of treating this problem. This works by causing a severe enough
inflammatory reaction in the vein injected such that the vein scars closed not allowing
blood within. This makes the vein "disappear"
Complications from this procedure are related to this intense reaction.
For example, little ulcerations or skin breakdowns that later heal may ocur. Also an area
of increase in pigmentation may ocur and take many months to disappear.
Injections are usually done without much discomfort experienced by the
patient. Compression of the legs and immediate ambulation are important things that the
patient can do for improved results.
LEG COMPRESSION
In all of these treatment modalities, leg compression
initially by wraps and eventually by stockings are the mainstay of getting and maintaining
a good result. More than likely, a "panty-hose" style stocking will be
